Why inspiring lecturing matters

Many believe that teaching should be driven by passion, a belief I wholeheartedly share.

Yet a host of things can get in the way of that passion.

It might be our capacity to connect with our students or battling feelings of imposter syndrome, or it might be that we have never actually had the opportunity to do some teacher training, or we may have done some yet it's not translated into practice.

Without a solid connection to our passion for teaching, we can easily be blown off course by things outside the lecture hall or, indeed, things inside the lecture hall. It can then become increasingly difficult to inspire ourselves or our students.

When we are connected to it, we have greater clarity and focus, and we can be more directive and confident in what we are doing and how we are doing it.

Inspiring lecturing is designed not only to connect to your passion but also to amplify and build it by focusing on the HOW of teaching.

My best hope for our workshop together is that this workshop supports you in making your teaching practice more enjoyable, meaningful and even more inspiring for you AND your students.

what is inspiring lecturing

It would be easy to call it a teaching strategy,  or maybe a roadmap, or a teaching GPS system. Although what I call it is a Organising Idea - an organising idea that helps to organise and integrate everything we already know about live teaching and offers insights on how we might build upon that.

An Organising Idea is not just a mere abstraction; it is a potent force that shapes one's understanding of teaching, drives one's actions, and gives coherence to one's work.

(Informed by the work of Lee Shulman)

Theory vs Practice

Please be aware that this workshop isn't going to share a whole load of theory about teaching, learning styles, or pedagogical arguments; instead, this workshop is grounded in the practice of live teaching; we are going to focus on the HOW, the practice and the teaching time with our students.

The workshop also starts from the position that you are already teaching; you already know a great deal about teaching, and this workshop is about honouring that and building upon this know-how. It's certainly not a start or about massive change; instead, it's about organising, refining and spotting the smallest possible things you can do (tomorrow) that can make the greatest difference to HOW you teach, not what you teach.

To achieve this, we need a map, a schema, and a new way to hold all we know to see new possibilities and ways to go. That is what this workshop has been designed to give you.

Testimonials

from the live sessions and online sessions during covid.

Dominic McVeigh

'I can quite happily say that this is one of the best training inputs that I have ever received. I would like to say that this should be part of the PGCert LTHE programme, as I have taken so much away from it and I feel that every lecturer no matter of their experience would benefit from this input.'
